| The first Workshop of Pivnet task 5/ERCOFTAC Sig 32 took place in Lisbon on Friday the 17th of July 1998. This Workshop was the first of a serie of four which should be organized each year in that frame. It was linked to the symponium on application of laser techniques to fluid mechanics which took place also in Lisbon from the 13th to the 16th of July. | |
| The aim of the Workshop was to start a cooperative activity
between the participating teams for the next four years around the validation and the
improvement of PIV. The objective was to identify well defined topics of cooperation and small groups of 2 to 3 teams who want to work together and report at each Workshop on their results. |

| For that purpose, a list of topics of interest was identified by the organizing committee and a questionnaire was distributed. The results which are reported in the present minutes show a strong interest to many aspects of PIV development and application. This interest was also demonstrated by the fact that 65 participants were registered at the Workshop. | |
| This first Workshop was organized in two parts. In the first part, invited speakers gave lectures on different topics of strong interest. In the second part, four sessions were run in parallel in which the participants had the opportunity to discuss specific topics and to look for cooperation. | |
| The next Workshop will take place in Rome on September 3rd and 4th 1999. It will be linked to the 8th International Conference on Laser Anenometry Advances and Applications. | |
